Serverless Runtime / Database Co-Design with Asynchronous I/O

Time
4:00 PM – 5:30 PM WAT

Hosted by DBMSEG Project Team

We kick off our current project by reading the paper together: why embedding SQLite in a serverless runtime is so appealing, what stops it from scaling, and how asynchronous bytecode I/O and a decoupled storage engine get around it.

What we will cover

  1. 01Why database round trips hurt at the edge
  2. 02Where SQLite blocks: synchronous I/O in the bytecode engine
  3. 03Asynchronous bytecode instructions for I/O
  4. 04Decoupling the query and storage engines
  5. 05Reading the evaluation: where the 100× comes from
  6. 06Q&A, and how to join the implementation
Session Formats

What a session looks like

Ninety minutes, cameras optional, questions always welcome. We rotate between four formats.

01

Paper Readings

We work through a classic or cutting-edge paper together, section by section.

02

Systems Walkthroughs

A guided tour through the source code of a real database or storage engine.

03

Code Reviews

Members share what they are building and get thoughtful, constructive feedback.

04

Guest Talks

Engineers and researchers from industry and academia share their work.
